Family Holiday Traditions
As the upcoming holiday season approaches, try to incorporate traditions that are inclusive. I am reflecting about our first Christmas together.
We both had vast differences regarding decorations, gift giving, when to open gifts, what to eat, and etc. Since my children were adults and living on their own, I had long since stop decorating. I had a dinky table top tree t…hat would get plugged in by Christmas Eve.
My spouse on the other hand still had a minor child at that time who would be spending Christmas with us. The preference was, that all of the bells and whistles of decorating be displayed the day after Thanksgiving. On December 23rd that year, I was asked about the decorations. Well, I have already shared what my “decoration” entailed. That did not suffice and I inquired what the expectation was.
After a long and humorous discussion, we agreed to try the whole “decorating thing” that year and every year since. Now I absolutely love preparing for the Christmas Holidays.
On the other hand I have always enjoyed Thanksgiving. I like to invite tons of people and prepare enough food to feed an army. My spouse used to prefer private family Thanksgiving meals. The operative word is “used” to…lol
You get the gist. It would be helpful to begin the discussions early. Even if you have been together for a while, check out new ideas and options. Be open to one another’s ideas and suggestions. Be willing to compromise.
Start a new tradition. Be creative, make it a family project. Do something completely out of the norm!
Please share your thoughts, traditions and ideas.
