We have spent all month sharing different thoughts/ideas regarding communication with our significant others, families, friends, co-workers, and people in general. We couldn’t leave out the most important parts; how to have effective communication skills and the barriers to effective
communication.
Effective Communication Skills
Active Listening… Please do not listen to speak
Non-Verbal Communication… Eye rolling, arms folded, you know the deal
Asking Questions… Ask open-ended questions that start with what or how
Being Clear and Succinct… Don’t make up stuff or throw in past issues
Clarifying and Summarizing… So, what you’re telling me is, you would prefer…
Being Empathetic… Ability to understand and express feelings for the other person
Providing Feedback… Only when the other person is done talking
Being Present.. Fellas, this is a get out of jail free card, be accepting
Barriers To Effective Communication
Physical Barriers… Separate areas while trying to communicate
Perceptual Barriers… We all see the world differently
Emotional Barriers. … Comprised mainly of fear, mistrust and suspicion
Cultural Barriers. … Being part of a group but unable to assimilate
Language Barriers. … Speaking and understanding a different language
Gender Barriers. … Different speech patterns between men and women
Interpersonal Barriers… Withdrawals, Rituals, Pastimes, Working, Games and closeness
